“Some like it haute” by Felice Hardy

Zum See

Zermatt is still a fairytale village, without cars, just horse drawn sleighs with the Matterhorn towering above. It’s the queen of foodie resorts and Zum See is the star of the slopes.

In an old hamlet it is reached either on foot from the town (40 minutes uphill for ht energetic) or by the Matterhorn Express gondola to Furi, followed by a ski or walk halfway done to the village of Blatten. The restaurant, inside a creaky little wooden hut, is run by a Bavarian, Max Mennig, and his wife Greti. Their simply cooked lamb is exceptional, and so is the signature millefeuille. The cellar includes a selection of interesting Swiss wines (no, not an oxymoron), among them L’Oeil de Perdrix.

On fine days the terrace is gorgeous. Robbie Williams, Sarah, Duchesse of York and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie of Bob Geldof and his daughters (all with their private guides) will be sunning themselves and eating rösti.

iOrder: Start with fresh Tuna carpaccio, follow with king prawns with curried noodles of lamb fillet with fresh herbs and rösti.
